Carter Smithson

Advising Board Member

Carter Smithson has been a Delaware County, Indiana native since birth. Carter first met Josiah through Boy Scouts of America during their middle school years. Josiah, Carter, and Samuel were all three actively involved together in scouting with Troop 9 in Selma, Indiana. Carter later earned the rank of "Eagle Scout" while in high school.

As Josiah and Carter entered high school, the two quickly discovered they shared many of the same interests and values, forming a friendship that would last a lifetime. Josiah and Carter also shared their birthday week together due to being born just a day apart. Whether spending summer evenings fishing, enjoying outdoor adventures, or simply making memories together, their friendship was built on loyalty, shared experiences, and a mutual desire to challenge one another.

United by a deep love for their country and a calling to serve others, Carter recalls, Josiah and him often discussing their aspirations of pursuing careers in the military or law enforcement. Those conversations eventually became reality as Carter began his full time law enforcement career with the Delaware County Sheriffs Office in Febuary of 2022. Shortly after being hired with the sheriffs office, Josiah was hired on with the Muncie City Police Department.

Carter currently serves with the Delaware County Sheriff's Office as a Night Shift Corporal, Field Training Officer (FTO), SWAT Team Member, and as a K-9 Handler.

While Josiah was working for the City of Muncie and Carter working with the sheriffs office, this allowed them to encourage one another professionally, exchange experiences, and continually strive to exceed a higher standard than what was expected of them. Both believed that personal growth, discipline, and service were lifelong commitments.

Josiah's perseverance during the most difficult season of his life became a lasting source of inspiration for Carter, influencing both his professional development and personal outlook on his own life.

Josiah's example serves as a constant reminder to embrace difficult challenges with courage, humility, and perseverance Carter mentioned. One memory Carter shared with us was during his preparation for SWAT selection. "I remember rucking before my SWAT selection process, and thinking to myself that if anyone would enjoy something like that, it would be Josiah, and not only would he enjoy it, but he would probably crush it. So I sent Josiah a video of me sucking during that ruck, because I figured he would get a kick out of it, but also because I wanted him to know that he motivated me to keep pushing." As Carter continues to train daily and prepare for other specialized assignments, he often finds himself reflecting on the resilience and determination Josiah displayed throughout his own journey.

Today, Carter continues to honor Josiah's legacy by living out the values they both shared: faith, service, discipline, physical fitness, and an unwavering commitment to becoming better each day. Carter remains grateful for the profound influence Josiah had on his life and is proud to support the mission of Maullers Ministry Inc., helping ensure that Josiah's testimony continues to inspire others to persevere through adversity, serve with purpose, and live a life worth living.

Carter had these words to say while reflecting on the impact Josiah had on his personal life and career. "Josiah not only impacted my own career, but also the career of those he knew at MPD. To this day, when I talk to one of his FTOs (field training officers), they often talk about the caliber of officer Josiah was and how his dedication to the craft would have made him the future of MPD. Josiah’s friendship has continued to inspire me and his brothers at MPD, to Keep Living a Life Worth Living. "

Carter serves as an Advising Board Member with Maullers Ministy Inc. Carter provides valuable guidance and perspective shaped by his personal friendship with Josiah, his experience in law enforcement, and his unwavering commitment to the organization's mission. His firsthand understanding of Josiah's character, values, and dedication to serving others offers an authentic voice in preserving Josiah's legacy. Carter's leadership, professional experience, and his passion for developing others, continues to strengthen the foundation and its mission.
